Thailand

After a few days of tooling around Singapore, I decided to make the first of my trips to Thailand. I wanted to see if the beaches were as good as I had always heard. I found a reasonable flight to Phuket and decided to stay at a resort that another colleague had recommended called The Racha.

The resort was located on an island called Koh Racha Yai, about a one hour boat ride from Phuket. I can only say good things about the place - perfect location, beautiful beach, great room and awesome breakfast buffet. I planned to spend 3 days there but ended up with an extra day when the Phuket airport was closed due to the protests agains the Thai PM that weekend. One thing about travel in Asia - you need buffer time due to unexpected protests, breakdowns and whatnot.

I tried out the infamous Thai massage and found that I actually liked it. It's like being pretzel dough - you get kneaded, rolled and then twisted around into shapes you didn't know were possible. Afterwards, whether out of relief or some actual after-effect of the massage, you feel relaxed and revitalized.

The Thai people were very nice, although I couldn't understand much of what they were saying. Talking is overrated anyway. Sitting on a beach, watching the crabs come out at dusk and run around on the beach, and drinking in a nice sunset along with a nice caipirinha is good for the soul. Other highlights were the Thai food on the beach in the evening and snorkeling around the island. Paradise!

And who can resist a Thai Dunkin Donut while waiting for the flight home?
