Gotta Pay the Bills

I flew back to Munich on March 21 for a 1 week stay to find an apartment. My work project had unexpectedly ended and fortunately I had already decided before then to move back to Munich and get settled in, desperately in need of at least one constant in my life. The plan was to find a place to stay then return to Cologne until my lease ran out at the end of April.

Once I got here, I never quite made it back to Cologne, with the exception of a 24 hour mad dash to Cologne to pile my things into an SUV and run them back to Munich. I took my two week German course, crashing at the Goethe Institute dorm. One day before Easter weekend I found a month to month let on a furnished apartment and moved in the following week to stay until I could find something more permanent, which was taking longer than I expected.

While things were going well in my personal life, I was starting to get stressed about work. 6 weeks passing with no opportunity for a next project, layoffs in progress and the economy at best looking towards a long and slow recovery with potential for additional setbacks I was confronting, as many are these days, the terrible what if.

As my residence permit is currently tied to my employment contract the thought of job loss is somewhat of a double whammy - lose job and lose home at the same time. I am in the process of applying for my permanent resident permit and have most of the documentation in place now to go forward with it.

Nevertheless, I am relieved to say that this week I had an interview for a new project and got it. So next Tuesday it is back to work for me! I will have to travel again but given the craziness of the last year and major long distance travel I am also relieved to say the next project will be in Geneva, Switzerland. One hour flight from Munich. Possibly some travel to Netherlands and UK. Also close by. Now I just hope this one is stable!

I am glad you found a new project and hope it sticks for awhile. Sounds like a perfect location! Our state budget is in a mess again and they are proposing 12 shutdown days a year for the next two years, plus no raises for two years either. Still, much better than a lot of people have it these days...
