A Fresh Start

Last year our garden had a pretty rough year. We had just created most of the flower beds, we got hit with a very dry April, then some violent, plant-shredding hailstorms before settling into a damp, slug-infested summer. Also, by the time mid-May rolls around each year, the trees in our central park area beyond our garden fill out and turn the garden into a mainly heavily shaded area that poses its own challenges.

When choosing plants for the garden, we decided to go mainly with shade-loving, forest dwelling plants like lilies of the valley, bleeding heart, hosta lilies, elf flowers and the like. Nearly everything we put into the ground last summer died fairly quickly given all the aforementioned points. When fall came, we thought about pulling out the lifeless sticks that were the remnants of our garden but I suggested to wait, to see if anything came back this year.

And wow did it! Nearly all the plants we put in that were perennials are back this spring and gorgeous! The roses, the forget-me-nots, they are growing beautifully this spring. Encouraged, we have decided to add to the collection and fill it out with even more perennials this spring. I guess a little patience goes a long way in gardening.

so now fingers crossed for no surprise thunder rains or unexpected ice storms that could mess up the garden like the last time :(

Excellent! We've had a lot of trial and error in our garden too and now I finally know which dead sticks are going to come back and which ones are really dead. :-) The forget-me-nots actually sow themselves every year so you'll eventually end up with tons of them.
