Frozen Lake

The last two Sundays we have been walking around Spitzingsee. It never ceases to amaze me how much Germans love the outdoors in any weather. The first weekend we went and it was warm and sunny, the lake was frozen and we walked across it. After awhile we came to a hiking trail and walked partway up and went sledding to get back down. This past weekend we hiked the whole trail up to Rotwandhaus, had lunch and then sled all the way down. The weather was miserable, not too cold but frozen rain combined with wind near the bald top of the mountain pelted across our faces and hit so hard I could feel it through my hiking pants. Sometimes the wind was gusting so hard I thought I was going to blow off the mountain and I couldn't see anything! This is weather no American would be caught outside in on purpose. But the Germans, they love it. We were far from alone on the mountain. They call it Sport. We can't just sit inside all winter, we need to make some Sport. Doesn't it feel great?

Not just Germans. Minnesotans will go sledding in weather like that. I know I have!

Don't you get nervous walking across a frozen lake?

Canadians are pretty good with cold weather gotta admit, but today with -19c and windchill of -29c, I didn't budge off the sofa. The winds were blowing 90 click an hour today, brrrr...ciao
