We are finally getting some much needed rain too - you can see in the pictures the damp, dark quality of the light. Hope it keeps up for a few more days.
I don't know why I didn't really notice these trees last year. They are everywhere in Basel and Munich. I was trying to guess what they were. My first guess was something that has died out in North America since they don't look familiar. Maybe an elm? After a little more research I found out what they are. Do you know?

In Cologne, the first West Germany Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, planted hundreds of these on either side of a canal that is part of the green belt in the city, and they are simply spectacular at the moment.

I don't know what those are called but there are lots of them in Heidelberg too. I guess the flowers are yellow in the middle until they are pollinated and then they turn pink!
Looks like a horse chestnut? They are seen in the US but only in planted situations (like in yards and parks).
Your garden is so pretty...the crocuses have just come out here!

Glad my sister's degree has paid off - she is correct (as may have been others who wouldn't spoil the fun), these are chestnut trees. Since the weather was crap I didn't get some of the shots I wanted but they look like Willy Wonka trees when there are dozens of them scattered around.
Carol - That is our neighborhood spire. I love it everytime I see it, though not as much as some nestled in the hills and mountains just outside of Munich.
